Blueberry Sauce Recipe
In my early days of blogging, when I used it to top my Blueberry Cheesecake, I began making my own sauce. It is my favorite way to enhance a dish.
It’s a sauce you will love, so pick as much fresh blueberries that you can in this summer. You can freeze some of them for later. Frozen blueberries are perfect for this dish. When the berries simmer, they release juices that create a thick, sweet base.
You can use this blueberry topping to add a lovely balance between tartness and sweetness. Blueberry sauce is the perfect alternative if you’re too busy to make a Blueberry Pie.
Blueberry Sauce
The recipe uses only four ingredients (except for water) to ensure that you enjoy every blueberry bite.
- Blueberries — The main ingredient in this blueberry sauce is blueberries. It gives it its colour, flavour and texture.
- Lemon Juice — The acidity from lemons brings out the flavours of blueberries and balances sweetness. It also gives the sauce an incredibly fresh and bright flavor.
- Sugar Creates a syrupy consistency by blending with berry liquids. This sweetens up the sauce and balances its tartness, which is a result of lemon juice or blueberries.
- Cornstarch Thickens and coats the blueberries with a sauce thickened by cornstarch.
- – Aids in the smoothing of the mixture by allowing sugar and cornstarch to be dissolved.
Variations
The blueberry recipe can be tailored to your liking or dish in a variety of ways. You can try these ideas.
- You can add orange and lemon zest to give it a little extra zip.

- Blueberries Stir the blueberries gently in a saucepan. Cook for 5 to 8 minutes until some juices are released and the blueberries become syrupy.
- Serve and Cool — Remove the blueberry pan from the stove and cool the sauce until it reaches room temperature. When the sauce is cooled, pour it into a jar with a lid or an airtight container and place in the fridge until ready to use.
Pro Tip:
Cornstarch will stick if it is added to a warm liquid. Mix and dissolve cornstarch in cold liquids prior to heating.

How to Pick the Best Blueberries
You will find that blueberries reach their optimum in the summer from late spring until early autumn, depending on which region you are located. Fresh blueberries, locally produced and bursting full of flavour, are at their best during the summer months.
If you are looking for ripe blueberries, look for deep, rich and dark purple-blue coloured berries. You should avoid berries with a greenish or redish color, because they may not be ripe. It should feel plump and firm to touch. Blueberries can come in a variety of sizes. While the larger ones tend to be sweeter and juicier, you shouldn’t ignore smaller blueberries. They are also packed with flavour.
