Homemade Mexican 7 Layer Dip with Beans, Sour Cream and Guacamole

7 Layer Dip Recipe

Seven Layer Dip, as the name suggests, is exactly what this recipe is… seven layers (plus a few garnishes) of ingredients layered together in a dish measuring 9×13 inches. The ingredients combine to create an easy, Mexican-inspired starter that can be served at any party.

Ingredients

The secret to making the perfect 7-Layer Dip lies in choosing only fresh ingredients. Even though everything can be bought pre-packaged, it is much easier to make a great 7-Layer Dip with the freshest ingredients.

  • Refried Beans: the base layer. Season your beans with extra flavor.
  • Guacamole — Prepared Guacamole may be quick, but our Homemade Guacamole has the best flavor.
  • This sour-tasting cream is creamy and has a strong flavour.
  • The cheese we like best is the Mexican cheese mix or cheddar.
  • Roma Tomatoes — We like chopped tomatoes better than salsa as there’s less liquid and because of the color. It helps make the layer look more defined.
  • Green Onions have a mild and refreshing onion flavor with a vibrant pop of colour.
  • Taco Seasoning – With our simple seasoning, you can easily turn plain ingredients in a familiar TexMex flavour. To make the seasoning, we mix it into the beans and the sour crème.
  • Cilantro: a fragrant, bright and vibrant garnish.
  • Black Olives: A classic addition to the dip.

Substitutions

The 7-Layer Dip can be customized to fit your personal taste. The ingredients can be changed to suit your taste.

  • Use cooked ground beef for our Taco Salad.
  • Corn
  • Greek yogurt
  • Chopped bell peppers
  • Salsa homemade (drain off any liquid excess to avoid the dip becoming soggy).
  • Black beans
  • Jalapenos

Pro Tip:

It is not mandatory, but if you have the time, make this dish ahead of time and chill it. The layers will set, and flavours can develop.

How to make 7 Layer Dip

It is only necessary to stir half of taco seasoning into the beans, and the rest directly into the sourcream container. This means that there are fewer dishes you have to wash. Homemade Guacamole can be prepared as I do, or you may choose to use store-bought.

  • Refried beans can be heated to help them spread. Incorporate half of the Taco Seasoning. Spread the bean mixture in the bottom 9×13″ glass casserole dish.
  • Spread Guacamole evenly over the layer beans.
  • Sour Cream — In a smaller bowl, mix together the remaining taco spice and the sour crème. Spread the sourcream mixture on top of the guacamole.
  • Add toppings and garnish– Sprinkle cheese over the top and add black olives that have been drained and chopped green onions. Use tortilla chips to dip.

Pro Tip:

It’s not important to layer in a particular order, just make sure you place the guacamole on the bottom. This will prevent the food from turning brown when it’s exposed to the air.

How to serve 7 layer Dip

It is nice to serve this in a clear glass dish to highlight each layer. As per your needs, you can present this Seven Layers Dip in various ways. Tortilla Chips are a traditional choice but you can use other items:

  • Scoops
  • Pita chips
  • Fritos corn chips
  • Sliced peppers
  • Potato chips

Make-Ahead

Do Ahead Preparation- Make and cover this appetizer a few hours ahead of your event, then place it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

Storing Leftovers– Return the leftovers back to your refrigerator and cover with foil or aluminum wrap. 7 Layer Dip keeps for about three days. Drain the liquid or use a soft paper towel to gently absorb liquid. Although it may not look so pretty after three days, I can assure you that the food still tastes delicious!

The 7 Layer Dip, whether you’re throwing a party or craving a delicious and satisfying appetizer is sure be a success. The vibrant colors and simple preparation make this the ideal dish to bring people together and have them keep coming back. Grab your favorite dippers and get the fiesta started!
